Style guide: dress your coffee table
The art of dressing coffee tables can really pull a living area together by connecting the centre of the room to the outer areas. The impact of a well-dressed coffee table can be very overlooked, so when dressing your home, either for yourself, for a property sale, or just for the ‘gram, here’s out top tips on the knack to a perfectly set out coffee table.
Use objects of various heights. Don’t be afraid to pair differing height items next to each other to create depth.
Use contrasting textures. If you have quite a shiny, glossy finish to your surface, pair this with accessories that have a texture. Whether it’s a textured book (e.g. Alexander McQueen) or some woven coasters. If you can match this texture with something else in the room too, that’s even better. Layering different textures that sit on top of each other creates depth, tone and interest.
Opt for a scented item. Adding a candle or diffuser (please take careful note of the oils that are suitable if you have pets) to the table creates a scented area in the centre of your space. If you find a large bottled diffuser or wide, circular candle, these double up as great focal pieces too!
Not all coffee tables are actually tables. If you lack space, using an ottoman or footstool can double up as a coffee table, giving you the flexibility to offer it up as additional seating, or somewhere to put your feet up too. By pairing a fairly heavy tray with accessories, a pouffe can provide coffee table space, without the commitment to always having a table in place.
If you’re sourcing a coffee table, look into nested tables as well as tables with two surfaces (often one shelf below the top one). Having two levels to a coffee table adds interest in itself and gives you the opportunity for more styling space, without getting in the way of the usability of it too.
Add a floral arrangement. If you’re like me and real flowers just aren’t an option (mainly because my pets think they’re quite tasty), then investing in some lovely Neptune stems and a vase will ensure you always have a beautiful arrangement, without the need for worrying about wilting stems.
